WESTMINSTER (CBSLA.com) — A Fountain Valley hospital patient has been charged for the attempted murder of his 91-year-old patient-roommate, the Orange County District Attorney's office said Friday.
Thirty-six-year-old Ibrahim Yousef Battat, of Laguna Niguel, is charged with one felony count of attempted murder and one felony count of elder abuse, a D.A. spokesperson said.
The charges also include sentencing enhancements for premeditation and deliberation and great bodily injury to an elder.
Prosecutors say Battat and the victim were patients and roommates at Fountain Valley Regional Medical Center when Battat allegedly attacked the victim at approximately 3:40 a.m. June 4, 2014.
The defendant is accused of using his hands to cover the victim's nose and mouth, repeatedly punching the victim and causing him to suffer a broken finger, major cuts to his head and hand and eye swelling.
Prosecutors say the attack continued until nurses and a patient in the next room arrived to restrain the defendant.
Fountain Valley police officers were called to the scene and made the arrest. The victim's identity has not been released.
If convicted, Battat faces a maximum sentence of 10 years to life in state prison.
He was being held on $1 million bail at press time.
Battat is scheduled for arraignment on June 27.
