Fans Of All-Things-Tomato Flock To Encino Farm To Stock Up

ENCINO (CBSLA.com) — Fans of all-things-tomato flocked to the legendary Tapia Bros. Farm in Encino on Friday to stock up just in time for spring.

"This is Tomatomania. This is the season. It's our time to rally around, you know, the tomato, which everybody loves for the summer garden," Scott Daigre, an organizer, told KCAL9's Kaj Goldberg.

As Goldberg reports, the event is one of the world's largest seedling sales and attracts tomato enthusiasts, who've waited all year.

"I always buy Sun Gold. It gets 7 feet tall and 7 feet wide and it tastes like candy," Janie Thompson said.

During Tomatomania, exotic plants are up for sale, like Nyagous, Odoriko, Orange Russian, Orange Strawberry, and Red Zebra heirlooms.

The irony of Tomatomania, Goldberg explains, is that there are no tomatoes yet.

But, in a couple of months, he says, the plants will provide a variety of treats.
