Ex-Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon, Who Was Focus Of 3-Year KNX 1070 Probe, Charged In Patient's Death

ENCINO (CBSLA.com) — A former cosmetic surgeon, who used to perform $100,000 procedures in his Beverly Hills and Encino offices and was the subject of a multi-year KNX 1070 investigation, was charged Tuesday with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 61-year-old liposuction patient, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

KNX 1070's Charles Feldman reported that Ehab Aly Mohamed, 46, who has since surrendered his license to practice medicine in California, was also charged with elder abuse involving a second patient. He's scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Van Nuys Superior Court.

If convicted on all the charges, Mohamed faces up to 10 years in prison.

On Aug. 21, 2010, Sharon Carpenter died in Mohamed's Encino office after a more than 10-hour, $100,000 liposuction operation. According to the criminal complaint, Mohamed, an Egyptian national who overstayed his visa, administered a toxic combination of lidocaine, fentanyl and oxycodone during the surgery.

On May 21, 2010, 77-year-old Zackie Handy had a liposuction procedure in the suspect's office. The victim, who lost consciousness at a certain point, survived the surgery, but continued to have health issues, said prosecutors.

In the past few years, Mohamed has been convicted of trying to sell medical equipment he did not own and attempting to pass off forged checks to a bank. He remains in jail on the check forgery conviction.

In an interview with KNX 1070, Los Angeles Police Department Det. Joel Price, who pursued Mohamed for many years, said it was a "very successful day for me."

Sharon Carpenter's daughter, Jennifer, said she was grateful to Price, Feldman, as well as the attorney representing her family, for helping the case move forward.

"I am just so grateful to everyone that has helped get it to this point. You, personally, Mr. Price, Mr. Stone, for keeping on top of this and just making sure this person never, ever does this to anybody ever again," she said.

Carpenter also said she saw Mohamed at the arraignment.

"(I felt) disgust, fear, disbelief, anger, sadness, you name it, I felt it," she said.
