A 68-year-old Los Angeles man was killed in Long Beach today when his vehicle sped into the back of a sedan, veered onto a center median and crashed into a support pillar of the San Diego (405) Freeway.

The crash occurred at 8:57 a.m. on the northbound side of Lakewood Boulevard at the San Diego Freeway, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Bystanders tried to help to the driver in the 2007 Kia Spectra until Long Beach firefighters took over, extricated him and rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His name was not released.

The 32-year-old Bellflower man driving the rear-ended 2016 Toyota Corolla did not realize he had been in a crash and drove away, but returned to the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

Anyone who saw the crash was asked to call Collision Investigation Detail Detective Joseph Johnson at 562-570-7355 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
