Dodgers Foundation Pledges 25K To Teach For America-Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) announced on Thursday that it will invest $25,000 this year for Teach for America-Los Angeles.
The grant will support the non-profit's ability to recruit and train a collection of teachers at Manual Arts High School, where Teach for America is one of more than 50 community partners contributing to an academic turnaround.
Teach For America-Los Angeles was established in 1990 to work with communities to expand education opportunity for children facing the challenges of poverty.
It recruits and develops outstanding college graduates and professionals to make an initial two-year commitment to teach in high-poverty schools and become lifelong advocates for education equity.
"LADF is pleased to help Teach For America–Los Angeles provide a pipeline of diverse, talented, and passionate teachers for Los Angeles schools with the greatest needs," said Nichol Whiteman, LADF executive director.
"By sponsoring TFA-LA's work at Manual Arts High School, we are helping to recruit and retain innovative leaders in our classrooms and community and prepare more students for college access and success," she added.
"TFA corp members bring a hopeful energy to Manual Arts High School that students really respond to and appreciate, which improves learning," said Stephanie Kuo, a Teach For America-Los Angeles alum who is in her fourth year of teaching special education students English at Manual Arts.
