Detective Killed In Santa Cruz Grew Up In Lomita

LOMITA (CBS/AP) — Two Santa Cruz police officers were shot and killed Tuesday, including a detective who grew up in Southern California.

Santa Cruz police Chief Kevin Vogel says Sgt. Loren Butch Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler were shot and killed as they followed up on a sexual assault investigation Tuesday.

Vogel says Baker was a 28-year veteran of the department and leaves behind two daughters.

Butler, who grew up in Lomita and graduated from Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, was a 10-year veteran of the department. She leaves behind two young sons.

Butler moved away from Southern California in 1992 to attend college at UC Santa Cruz. She joined the Santa Cruz Police Department after graduating from Evergreen Police Academy. During her time with Santa Cruz police, she has worked as a patrol officer, a hostage negotiator, a foot and bike officer, an agent at the county drug task force and as a detective.
