DA: Felix 'Wanted To Kill' Palm Springs Police Officers
PALM SPRINGS (CBSLA.com) — The murders of two Palm Springs police officers were cold, calculated, and rise to the level of first degree, claims Riverside County District Attorney, Mike Hestrin.
"This individual wanted to kill police officers," Hestrin said. "He armed himself with a weapon to kill police officers. He put on a vest so he would be protected to kill police officers. That's the motive."
CBSLA learned the DA suspects John Felix intentionally killed officers Jose Vega and Lesley Zerebny while lying in wait and wearing a body vest last Saturday during the shootout.
Court documents claim Felix, an ex con with two priors, had ammunition designed to penetrate metal and armor and used a stolen AR-15 to intentionally kill the officers.
Documents claim Felix knew or should have known Vega and Zerebny were police officers doing their job, answering the domestic violence call.
Earlier this week, Zerebny's father called Felix evil.
"He ambushed them in cold blood I have no problem with giving him the death penalty."

CBSLA has also learned new details that Felix is also facing attempted murder of Palm Springs police officers Jeffrey Burton, Abraham Vargas and sergeant Shawn Flinn, who were also on the scene last weekend.
The DA will decide in the next couple of weeks if the death penalty is on the table.
