Cross Country Runners Treated For Heat-Related Injuries
COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) — A group of runners participating in a cross country race in Costa Mesa were taken to area hospitals to be treated for heat-related injuries, a fire captain said.
Capt. Chip Dill of the Costa Mesa Fire Department said paramedics responded to the Orange Coast Classic track event in the 2700 block of Fairview Road about 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
According to Dill, there were eight patients, six of which were taken to area hospitals to be treated for heat-related injuries.
KNX 1070's Chris Sedens reports that the runners were apparently suffering from dehydration with temperatures topping 100 degrees.

Dill said about 750 runners from 33 junior colleges participated in today's race, which ended at noon.
"This is the first time they [race officials] had any issues," Dill said. "They've had this race for the past 10 years."
Meantime, at least eight high school cross country runners were treated for heat exhaustion at the Mt. Carmel Cross Country Invitational, Sedans reported.
According to the San Diego Fire Rescue Department, three athletes were taken to a local hospital.
