Costa Mesa Man Sentenced To Prison In 1979 Murder Of Former Girlfriend

LOS ANGELES ( — A 62-year-old man was sentenced to prison Friday for the 1979 murder of a Torrance nurse he dated briefly.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Douglas Gordon Bradford, of Costa Mesa, was ordered to spend 26 years to life in state prison for committing first-degree murder of 28-year-old Lynne Knight.

Police said Bradford stabbed Knight more than 15 times inside her Anza Avenue apartment on Aug. 29, 1979.

He also strangled her with a homemade wire garrote, which was found underneath her body, the district attorney explained.

Bradford and Knight, who was originally from Canada, had dated for some time, but later broken up.

At the time of the murder, he was a California State Long Beach engineering student.

Bradford was convicted on Aug. 14, and was immediately taken into custody following the guilty verdict, authorities explained.

According to police, the cold-case was filed in May 2009. Old-fashioned police work by Torrance Police Department's Cold Case Unit detectives assisted to solve the case.
