Burglary Suspect Wounded, In Custody Following Officer-Involved Shooting In Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA) — An armed burglary suspect was shot and wounded by officers in Santa Monica Thursday night.

Santa Monica police responded to the area of 1100 block of Cedar Street where they were searching for a burglary suspect.

The suspect was armed with a gun when he broke into a home in the 1100 block of Pine Street, Santa Monica police said.

The resident came home just before 6:30 p.m. and reportedly found the would-be burglar inside. The homeowner ran out of the home and called the police. The suspect left and barricaded himself at a nearby home.

"When we made contact with the suspect, he was holding a firearm and the suspect then ran from police officers and barricaded himself in the backyard of a home on 1100 block of Cedar," said Santa Monica Police Lt. Candice Cobarrubias.

CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Rachel Kim spoke to a woman named Monica who lives in that home. She, her husband, the couple's 12-year-old son and Monica's mother were able to make it out safely before the suspect commandeered the home.

"At that moment," says Monica, "my husband said 'We need to leave now!' We went to the front door and there was a SWAT team there. They said you need to get out now!'"

During the standoff, multiple shots were fired and the suspect was wounded.

Police said they encountered the suspect in the backyard as he attempted to flee. He didn't comply and was shot.

The suspect was taken into custody and taken to the hospital in unknown condition.
