British Ambassador Readies For Royal Visit To Los Angeles

HANCOCK PARK (CBS) — Preparations were in full swing Thursday at the British Consulate for the arrival of the Royal newlyweds to Los Angeles.

Prince William and the former Kate Middleton have been jet-setting across Canada and will arrive in L.A. on Friday.

The trip is bringing more attention to the British Monarchy than it has received "across the pond" in years.

"These are people who met at university, they've known each other and obviously are extremely easy in each other's company. That comes through and it is the modern monarchy that we're seeing," said British Ambassador to the U.S. Sir Nigel Sheinwald, who flew in from Washington D.C. to great the Royal couple.

They are expect to stay at the stately Hancock Park home of the British consul-general with a VIP reception Friday.

High-profile guests are expected to be there.

"The governor is going to be here. The mayor of Los Angeles will be here. Some British people, who have move over here, like Graham Nas the rock musician, Stephen Fry the comedian," Sheinwald said.

Then the couple will head off to a whirlwind trip benefitting numerous charities.

Next door to the consul-general, Buddy Harrison has put up British flags and hopes to sneak a peek at the couple.

"There is a balcony. We can always look over the balcony," she said pointing to the residence.

In neighboring Larchmont Village, the couple's growing celebrity is getting mixed reviews.

"I think a monarchy is outdated and unnecessary," said Hancock Park resident Daniela Griffin.

"It may as well be people who, you know, a younger population can relate to and aren't feeling like they're just reaping the benefits of history," said resident Kim Orchen.

Hancock Park will become part of the Royal history Friday.

Southern California was chosen in part because of strong English ties to the entertainment industry, as well as other businesses, according to the Ambassador.

He said it would be especially exciting for him, being the first time he will meet the Royal couple.
