Skywatchers Anticipate Black Moon Friday

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — We know blue moons happen very rarely – hence the term "once in a blue moon" – but it's a black moon we have to look forward to Friday.

While a blue moon is the second full moon in a month, a black moon is the second new moon in a single month and only happens once every 32 months. This coming Friday will be one of those times.

Perhaps a black moon is less known because skywatchers won't really see anything. A new moon phase is when the moon's Earth-facing side is fully in shadow.
