In addition,home cooks can create traditional recipes to enjoy during the family dinner hour by adding a few simple grocery items on to the grocery shopping list. Here are a few specialty recipes that are practical to prepare while at the same time creating visual appeal as part of a specialty meal to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

Fresh Bagel, Lox and Cream Cheese

  • 1 fresh bagel sliced
  • 3 slices of smoked salmon
  • 2 tablespoons of capers
  • 3 tablespoons whipped kosher cream cheese
  • 1/2 red onion cut into thin slices

1. Place sliced bagel on plate
2. Spread whipped cream cheese on each bagel slice
3. Top each bagel with smoked salmon slices
4. Sprinkle red onion slices on top of each bagel
5. Sprinkle with capers

Fresh bagels from the local bakery set the foundation for this traditional favorite that is enjoyed throughout the
year as a restaurant meal of choice or a specialty snack. Whipped cream cheese is used in this recipe
to provide a velvety smooth spread for the base of fresh smoked salmon and toppings of choice.

Honey Almond Cake

  • 2 cups of unbleached flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup low fat milk
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla


  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Place two mixing bowls and ingredients on a counter or table.
  3. Place flour, salt, baking soda sugar and baking powder in one bowl. Stir and mix well. Set to the side.
  4. Place eggs, milk, honey and extracts in the second bowl. Stir and mix well. Set to the side.
  5. Pour egg mixture into flour mixture. Stir and mix until creamy.
  6. Spray 8x2 cake pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  7. Pour cake batter into the cake pan and bake for 45 minutes.
  8. Remove cake from oven and cool for 15 minutes before serving.
  9. Option: You can top the cake with 2 tablespoons of honey brushed on the top. Then sprinkle 1/2 cup thinly sliced almonds on top and serve.

Honey cake is a tasty dessert and treat that is delicious to eat as well as special in its traditional symbolism when preparing a family meal. This delicate treat is versatile in its ability to capture the flavor of the foods that accompany its subtle sweet flavor. As an ingredient here, it stands to represent the bright hope of a sweet new year to come. In addition to honey cake, honey can be served as a natural dip in a small bowl surrounded by sliced apples or challah to enjoy with it.
