You can have any number of reasons for wanting to visit a French restaurant. Maybe you're looking for a romantic place to celebrate a special occasion. Maybe you like eating rich food in smaller portions so you won't feel like you've overindulged. Maybe you just want some entrees like rabbit that are not available on a lot of American menus. Whatever your reason, here are some of the best places in Orange County when you're looking for a French restaurant.

Bonjour is not only in a beautiful part of Orange County, it also has all of the French favorites including onion soup, crepes and croque monsieur sandwiches. It also has a couple different varieties of quiche, including one with lox, tomatoes and cheese. You can order an individual serving of quiche or an entire quiche to take with you. This is a pretty small place and it doesn't take reservations. Bonjour is open only for breakfast and lunch.

With what is often advertised as "the best climate in the world," San Clemente is a good place to visit. It's an even better place to visit if you head to Mimosa Cafe. On the regular breakfast menu, you'll find croissant French toast while on the weekend brunch menu, you'll find creme brulee French toast among many other delicious menu items. The dinner menu includes some French favorites including chicken Dijon, duck breast and a charcuterie plate with three meats and three cheeses.

The lunch menu at L'Hirondelle has a couple traditional French dishes. The dinner menu, however, is where you really see the French influence. The dinner menu includes French favorites such as duck and rabbit simmered in white wine with prunes. The prices here make this a good place if you're looking for a French restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. L'Hirondelle is open for dinner only on Sundays, and is closed on Mondays.

Pescadou is run by two people who grew up in France and brought French cuisine with them to Newport Beach. The menu is filled with French specialties such as escargot, mussels and bouillabaisse. If seafood is not what you seek, you have plenty of options like rabbit, coq au vin and roast duck. Pescadou also offers some small-plate options, and boasts a good selection of red and white wines. The trouble with French cuisine is that while it is delicious, it can also be somewhat expensive. Bistro Bleu offers good French cuisine at reasonable prices. From appetizers like brie en croute to lobster bisque to entrees like steak au poivre, this bistro has French dishes you're looking for. It also has aperitifs like Kir (Chardonnay with black currant) and sparkling wine with strawberry and passion-fruit essence, and plenty of cheeses to enjoy.
