Breakfast sandwiches have come a long way since the groundbreaking Egg McMuffin way back when. For people on the go, they were fast and easy, and if you had pretty low standards, they might have even been tasty. But times have changed and these days breakfast sandwiches come with gourmet cheese, meats, greens, seasoned eggs and many other things in between all on artisan bread. But you won't find any of these at your local fast food joint. Check out these top five places for the best breakfast sandwiches in Los Angeles.

Breakfast doesn't have to be boring if you're a vegan or vegetarian. Simply head over to Localita & The Badasserie and have a hearty and delicious breakfast that is 100 percent animal free. The Sir Nasty (vegan sausage patty dressed in vegan soy free cheddar, vegan chipotle sauce, red onion, maple syrup and Sriracha sauce on a sprouted multigrain English muffin) is a great way to start your day. Another breakfast sandwich favorite is The Tiki Time (vegan sausage patty, vegan soy free cheddar, BBQ sauce, vegan bacon bits and pineapple slices).

Breakfast at Huckleberry may not be cheap, but it will certainly be delicious. The green eggs and ham with La Quercia prosciutto, pesto and arugula on a house-made english muffin is well worth the $12.25 price tag. Another delicious option is the fried egg sandwich with sunny side up eggs, Niman Ranch bacon, Gruyère, arugula and aioli on country bread for $11.50. Both breakfast sandwiches are customer favorites and the lines at Huckleberry can get long. Breakfast is served from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. with no exceptions, so all you late risers might want to plan ahead.

Glide some sauce and cheese on the sides, pop them in the oven and you've got pizza for dinner. As for breakfast, the sky's the limit. Sam's Bagels has a wide variety of bagels that will enhance all of your breakfast cravings. Bacon, egg and cheese on an everything bagel? Sam's can do that. Lox and cream cheese on an egg bagel? Sam's can do that. Vegetable cream cheese with tomato on a jalapeño bagel? Yup, Sam's has it. Sam's is open from 6am to 6pm but the pickins get slim after 10 a.m.

Grand Central Market
317 S. Broadway
Los Angeles, CA 90013

When ordering a breakfast sandwich at Eggslut (yes, you read that correctly), prepare to get messy. Eggs slathered in melted cheddar cheese, honey mustard aioli, Sriracha mayo, chipotle ketchup or potato puree are just some of the toppings that will mess your face and your clothes if you're not careful. Due to popular demand, Eggslut has extended its hours and is now open from 8am until 4pm so you have plenty of time to get your hands on the ultimate breakfast sandwich experience: The Fairfax. It is made with soft scrambled organic eggs, chives, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and Sriracha mayo on a brioche bun. Grab extra napkins.
