Peach-Hungry Bear Invades Kitchen Of Altadena Home

ALTADENA ( — An Altadena resident was unharmed Friday after she found a bear in the kitchen of her home near the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley.

The woman notified Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies of the encounter at her residence along the 1300 block of Sunny Oaks Circle at 11:10 a.m., according to LASD Altadena Station.

When the woman screamed, the bear went outside and rummaged through some trash cans before dozing by her pool. The bear was munching on peaches she had left on a kitchen counter.

She was able to grab her video camera and capture the bear rummaging around her yard.

The woman called 911 and said "I just had a bear in my kitchen and now he's in my front yard slumped over my trash can and eating my trash."

She reported, "He was here on my property yesterday, too."

The surprised dispatcher then asks, "Okay ...  you said he was in the house?"

The woman calmly explained, "Yes, I have a kitchen which opens to the back door, and, um...when I saw him, I just screamed and he ran out."

The homeowner finally told the dispatcher, "I don't have a problem with [the bear] but I don't want him in the house." To which the 911 dispatcher said, with a laugh, "Well, yeah. Of course."

Officials with the Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) were not expected to respond to the call unless the bears returned to the area.

The sighting comes just one day after a large bear with two cubs was spotted at a residence along the 2800 block of N. Holliston Avenue, less than one square mile from the location of the encounter on Sunny Oaks.

Several residents reported seeing the animal eating trash in the neighborhood around 10 a.m., according to CDFW officials.

A similar sighting was also reported on May 3 when three bears were seen climbing in a tree in the 1400 block of Edgecliff Lane in Altadena.
