Anaheim police shoot pursuit suspect after crash near Santa Ana park
Officers from the Anaheim Police Department killed a pursuit suspect accused of wounding someone at a local motel Wednesday night.
The suspect allegedly shot the person around 7:45 p.m. at the Kona Inn Motel in Anaheim. The victim is in stable condition, according to Anaheim PD.
The suspect, who officers believed was armed, drove a white Chevrolet Silverado through the cities surrounding Anaheim, such as Cerritos and La Palma, while speeding down CA-91. The driver exited the freeway near Northeast Anaheim and continued to evade police on city streets before reentering CA-91.
At times, the suspect drove past red lights and sped through intersections, narrowly avoiding other drivers.
Before getting back onto surface streets at around 8:30 p.m., the driver suddenly began driving on the wrong side of the freeway, squeezing past other traffic.
Police attempted to end the pursuit with an unsuccessful spike strip and PIT maneuver. The suspect continued to blow through intersections.
After stopping in traffic, an officer attempted to pin the suspect's truck by using the police cruiser to push the driver onto the sidewalk. However, it did not work, and the suspect continued to drive away from police.
Police continued to chase the driver until a successful PIT maneuver sent the pickup into a wall on W. Memory Lane between City Drive and Bristol Street near Memory Lane Park in Santa Ana.
The suspect tried to drive away but crashed into another wall, allowing officers to pin the pickup. The suspect appeared to accelerate into a wall, creating a cloud of smoke that obscured the truck. At that point, police shot and killed the suspect. The smoke dissipated shortly after.
One passenger exited the pickup after a brief standoff and surrendered to police. The passenger was not harmed.
Anaheim PD said investigators found a handgun in the truck when it was initially searched by the California Department of Justice.
