American Woman Accused Of Insulting United Arab Emirates In Public Remains Jailed

ABU DHABI (CBSLA.com) — An American woman has been jailed since late February in the United Arab Emirates over allegations she insulted the country in public.

The unidentified 25-year-old woman appeared in court Monday.

She explained that two men had approached her at the Abu Dhabi International Airport and spoke to her in a manner she didn't like. She says when she refused to engage with them she was arrested.

It is a misdemeanor to insult the UAE in public. The woman asked the court to pay a fine and be released.

A verdict is expected next month. In the meantime, she is expected to stay behind bars for at least three more weeks.
