Actors Gyllenhaal, Pena Witness Gang Violence During Police Ride-Along
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena were on a police ride-along Wednesday night when officers responded to a gang shooting in South Los Angeles.
The shooting took place at 10 p.m. on the front steps of the Van Ness Recreation Center, where children had been playing hours earlier.
The center, which participates in the Summer Night Lights program, was supposed to stay open until midnight. However, it closed before the shooting took place.
Gyllenhaal and Pena were preparing for their upcoming film, End of Watch, with officers from the 77th Street Division of the LAPD.
They stood close by as emergency personnel attended to the shooting victim, who was shot by rival gang members.
He is currently in stable condition.
