LOS ANGELES (CBS) — General Motors wants the owners of 8,000 Chevrolet Volts to bring their cars in to dealers to address possible battery fire issues.
GM is asking owners to take their electric and gas cars to dealers to have the structure around the cars' batteries strengthened.
After a fire three weeks after a side-impact crash test conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration prompted more tests of the ground-breaking sedan. In three more side-impact crash tests on separate Volts, two sparked or caught fire.
The fires have been blamed on a coolant leak that caused an electrical short.
