NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — The scene of a fatal car crash — where five teenagers died — was finally cleared early Tuesday morning after a more than 10-hour investigation.
An Infiniti hit a tree and split in half around 5:20 p.m. Monday on Jamboree Road and Island Lagoon Drive, Newport Beach police said.
When officials arrived on the scene, they found the vehicle engulfed in flames and four people ejected. A fifth passenger was partially ejected from the vehicle, officials said.
Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. One person was taken to Mission Viejo Hospital, but died before arriving.
"It was one of the worst I've seen in my nearly 30 years," Newport Beach Fire Department Cpt. Glenn White said.
The identities of the victims, who are only being described as three young women and two young men from Irvine, have not been released, according to the Orange County Coroner's Office.
Investigators say speed was a factor in the crash.
The crash scene was cleared at 3:50 a.m. Tuesday.
