Angelenos love to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the day that commemorates the astonishing victory on May 5, 1862 of a small Mexican army over the powerful French in the battle of Puebla. To celebrate in style, join other like minds by heading over to the annual Olvera Street Festival expressly meant for this occasion, a time when streets are blocked off for partying, when all kinds of food and drink from south of the border are in abundance, and where mariachis play and folklorico dancers entertain, as do less traditional acts. Also on hand are a plethora of booths selling Mexican goods, a selection of carnival rides and even a celebratory beer garden. Also expect a bevy of fine museums to be open during this celebration, said to be the biggest of its type in the entire nation, and possibly in the entire world. Think massive block party with about half a million people enthusiastically taking part.

CicLAvia is the Spanish term for "bike way" which explains why, on this day in the middle of the month, some of Los Angeles' well worn streets are temporarily closed so that all kinds of vehicles without motors can get the chance to ride with pride as they preside over these thoroughfares. Everything from bicycles to tricycles, from skateboards to strollers are on hand for this special event that was first celebrated in Bogotá, Colombia. Along the route, food trucks and street performers will do their thing as shops and restaurants also are equipped to make this an especially memorable day in May.
