LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A man is dead and another injured following a shooting outside of church in the Rampart District.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. Sunday outside Prince of Peace Church, on Beverly Boulevard near Reno Street.
During Sunday night services, 25 year-old Andres Ordonez went outside to confront a woman scrawling graffiti on a wall near the church, according to the LAPD. Another church member also came out and they tried to get the female suspect to stop.
Police said after some sort of altercation, a male suspect exited a parked car nearby and shot both church members.
Ordonez died at the scene, KNX1070's Kim Marriner reported.
The other man who was shot is recovering from his injuries.
Ordonez leaves behind a wife, who is pregnant, and a young son.
Socorro Hernandez, the victim's neighbor, said he and his family were devoted to the church.
"He went every day to church and he only talked about God..." Hernandez said.
Investigators suspect the shooter and tagger are gang members, and are in a turf war with other gangs.
Officials have not released a suspect description.
"The people who are responsible for this are cowards of the worst kind. They know they weren't armed," detective Jeff Cortina said.
The crime has outraged police and the community. Councilman Eric Garcetti announced that a $50,000 reward will officially be offered Tuesday by the L.A. City Council.
Police said they need the public's help finding the suspects.
"I know a lot of times people are afraid...I need them to do something to bring closure to this," Cortina said.
