Thousands Walk Texas In Susan G. Komen 3-Day
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - For eight years, D'Lyn Biggs has walked the Susan G. Komen 3-Day. She's logged more than 400 miles, and along with a team of supporters has raised more than $800,000 for the cause.
"I lost my mom to breast cancer six years ago," she said. "Her name was Sue Stephens. She was only 61. My girls were four and six and no child should grow up without a grandmother."
Biggs is the Captain of 'Team Tiara.' Each year she passes out paper crowns with her mother's picture on it. She says the gesture helps some people get through the walk.
"This girl stopped me a while ago. I had given her a tiara in 2011 and she stopped me and said, 'I still have it,'" Biggs recalled.
Along the way, Biggs has made new friends and ran into old ones, like Jim Hillman, whose mother died from breast cancer in 2004.
One year, Hillman walked all fourteen of the 3-Day's across the country. "Started in Boston and out to San Diego, across the country," he said. "Eight hundred forty miles, $32,000 for fundraising."
The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is a 60 mile walk. Participants dedicate months of training and preparation and each individual raises a minimum of $2,300. Participants walk about 20 miles a day, for three consecutive days, hoping to raise awareness about breast cancer, and raise money in hopes of one day finding a cure.
Others, like Cheryl Reynolds, who is a member of "Angels for a Cure," cheer the walkers along their 60 mile journey. "I know a lot of survivors. I know a lot of people who have lost their battle with the disease and this is just an easy give back," she said.
For participants like Biggs, a little encouragement goes a long way. "Just to see that we're increasing awareness and helping spread the word and know that we are making an impact, it's worth every step."
Residents can go to a public cheering station to encourage walkers during the final two days of the race.
