Police In Mesquite Shoot & Wound Car Burglary Suspect

MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) - Authorities in Mesquite are investigating an incident that involved a police officer shooting and injuring a man who was suspected of breaking into a pickup truck. It all started at around 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night, when police were called to the 1300 block of South Town East Boulevard for somebody setting off a car alarm.

When an officer arrived at the scene, he located the suspect sitting inside of a pickup truck as the vehicle's security alarm was sounding. The officer confronted the suspect and things then escalated quickly. That scuffle led to the officer firing his weapon and striking the man at least one time.

However, the suspect continued to fight with officers even after he was wounded and placed into handcuffs. Police stated that the man demonstrated such physical strength that it took three officers just to hold him down until paramedics could arrive at the scene to assess his injuries.

"I think that, I'm not an expert on human strength, but I think if someone has been shot and handcuffed and on the ground, and it still takes four large men to hold him down, that might indicate there are other factors in place," added Lt. Brian Parrish with the Mesquite Police Department.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital and is now in stable condition after undergoing surgery. Officials have not released the name of that injured individual or the name of the officer who fired the shot. Authorities plan to review body camera and dashboard camera video, and see if there is possibly surveillance camera footage, to assist with their investigation.
