Number Of Measles Cases & People Getting Vaccinated Growing
NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - The measles and the vaccination to prevent it aren't something mother of two, Cabrini McCadney, really ever thought about until now.
McCadney says, "Because I haven't heard of anyone get it til now, so I said ok, it's time to go get them."
Allegra Brown agrees, "It's a big concern."
Brown says she was already planning to bring her son to a Tarrant County Immunization clinic in Fort Worth. He starts kindergarten Monday. "I wanted him to get all vaccinations," she said.
On Wednesday, Denton County officials announced that five people in Justin, between the ages of nine and 17, had confirmed cases of measles.
And in Tarrant County, the number of measles cases jumped by four to a total of 15.
Officials say all 20 cases are related to someone who visited the Eagle Mountain Church in Newark, who returned from a mission trip abroad, and unknowingly spread it to those who either weren't vaccinated at all or who had only one dose of the vaccine.
Two doses are highly recommended because health officials say that will guarantee you won't get the measles.
The clinic at the La Gran Plaza Mall in South Fort Worth just opened Monday. Anita Colbert, a supervisor of immunization outreach, says they've been very busy. "I think there are more people coming in earlier."
The clinic has already immunized nearly 900 people in just three days, far more than the same period last year.
Colbert said people are concerned. "They're asking to check their children's shot records. They're asking me just in case, make sure their child has had the measles, mumps rubella shot."
School districts remind parents that students need proof of immunizations before they'll be allowed to begin classes Monday.
