'No Refusal' DWI Program Expanded To Thanksgiving
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Tarrant County announced on Tuesday a $300,430 grant that will allow the county to expand its "No Refusal" program from two holidays to seven, including Thanksgiving.
During "No Refusal" periods, participating police agencies can use search warrants to take blood samples from people arrested for DWIs who refuse to take a breath test.
The grant money is being used for a number of purposes, including sending police personnel to a "blood draw" school. It is also being used to establish blood draw sites throughout the county, supply medical kits to draw blood, and for lab analysis of the samples.
The program will kick-off on Wednesday night and will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 4 p.m. through Sunday.
"We are asking our citizens to plan ahead so they don't put themselves or others in danger by driving impaired," said Assistant Criminal District Attorney Richard Alpert in a release. "If they follow that advice, they will have more money to spend on themselves and their loved ones this holiday season and less on towing, bondsmen, hospital bills, and attorney's fees."
The other holidays currently selected for this program are Christmas, New Years, the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day and the Super Bowl.
