New DISD Superintendent Details Restructuring Plan
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - New Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Mike Miles' outline for restructuring the school system has central goals, he said today.
"It's about making sure that we have the structure that will allow us to improve the quality of instruction, and raise student achievement".
Miles released his official plan of action, known as Destination 2020 to school board trustees last week.
Included in that plan is a division known as School Leadership. Under the plan, all current top-level supervisors, including learning community executive directors, must apply and interview for newly developed positions.
Miles said today some of those employees would indeed be hired. "We're going to rehire several of them. You'll find a number of them have been rehired."
But Miles' plan for the DISD is anything but a carbon copy of past initiatives.
"I can't talk about previous superintendents. I don't know what they were doing and I don't know how they operated," Miles said of his direction. "I think you have to look at my past and see that when we say we're gonna do something in our action plan we follow through."
One change from previous administrations, Miles may move away from the DISD trend of recruiting bilingual educators.
Former Superintendent Michael Hinojosa expanded bilingual teacher presence, due to the growing limited English-speaking student population.
Miles said he values bilingual teachers, but said there's an exception.
"If you're not a good teacher, but you speak Spanish, we don't want you. Our kids don't need you".
For now, Miles is working in a consultant capacity. His first official day on the job is July 1.
