Man Arrested For DART Bus Shooting In Dallas

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Authorities in Dallas have arrested a man for shooting a passenger on a DART bus. The incident happened shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning near the intersection of Bonnie View Road and Ledbetter Drive.

Dallas Police Department information officer Kevin Janse said, as the investigation was just getting underway, that a black male shot another black male in the leg before sprinting out of the bus's back door and running to a nearby apartment complex.

The shooting was believed to be gang related, and it was said that the victim and the suspect knew each other.

The suspect was taken into custody for violating his probation after a burglary charge and questioned by authorities just before 2 p.m. Wednesday.

A total of seven people were on the bus at the time of the shooting. None of the other passengers were injured. DART spokesman Mark Ball said the other passengers were riding toward the front-end of the bus, while the shooting happened in the back.

The victim was taken to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas in stable condition to recover from a single bullet wound to his upper thigh.

Dallas Police spokesman Kevin Janse said the victim is not cooperating with police and may not press charges against the suspect, who will be held on the probation violation while DART detectives acquire enough evidence to charge him with the shooting.

He is only a person of interest at this time, Janse said.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit spokesman Morgan Lyons issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon, saying that "incidents of this type are very rare for DART." The public transportation provider assigns both uniformed and undercover officers to ride buses and trains, as well as patrol their various bus and train stations, in order to help prevent situations like this from happening.

Neither the gunman nor the victim have been identified.
