Exclusive: Man Who Shot, Killed Girlfriend Confesses To CBS 11, Turns Self In

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - In an exclusive interview with CBS 11 News, a man who authorities said shot and killed 15-year-old Makayla Davis in Tarrant County confessed, and then turned himself over to police.

Sebastian Ramirez-Barcenas, 18, showed up at the CBS 11 studios with two friends at about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, and then confessed -- on camera -- to the Saturday killing of Davis, who he claimed was his girlfriend. Authorities had been searching for him with a drone after he fled the scene of the shooting.

Ramirez-Barcenas told CBS 11 News that he did not mean to kill Davis. "I'm not no killer. I love her a lot," he said. "It was an accident." Ramirez-Barcenas said that he accidentally shot Davis while cleaning a shotgun that belonged to Davis' brother. "I didn't know it was loaded. They told me it wasn't loaded."

Ramirez-Barcenas explained that she had just walked into the room when the incident happened. "It just went off. When I racked it back, it just went off," he said. After the shot went off, he said that he could only think, "I killed my girlfriend. I killed the person I love. I love her a lot. It was an accident."

Ramirez-Barcenas said that he then ran into the woods, not knowing what to do, and saying that he was too afraid to go back to scene. "[The family] scattered. I was like, 'What did I do?' I was sitting there watching her. But I had to run because of her dad."

When describing his girlfriend, he said, "She was kindhearted. She helped me and everything. She helped me through stuff. I didn't mean to shoot her. I didn't pull the trigger or anything."

The 18-year-old said that he loved his girlfriend, and that her family knew that. In a message to Davis' family, he said "I'm sorry" and then added, "They knew I loved her a lot -- her grandma, her dad, her brother, everyone... the little kids," Ramirez-Barcenas said.

Authorities said that the shooting happened in the 5400 block of Wilson Road, near Everman.

Ramirez-Barcenas, who said that he is from Mexico, said that he went to school in the DFW area until his freshman year at Legacy High School. He also said that he has had roots in the area since 2007.

After the interview, one of Ramirez-Barcenas' friends told him before they left that he was doing the right thing by turning himself in. "You're standing up. You're doing what's right and you're being a real man. This is what a real man would do, you understand?" his friend said. "I will be there with you 100 percent. I love you man. You're doing the right thing."

Ramirez-Barcenas did not say why he chose the CBS 11 studios for his confession.

The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office confirmed that he turned himself over to authorities. He was transported and booked into the Tarrant County detention facilities. Ramirez-Barcenas has been charged with criminally negligent homicide on a $50,000 bond, according to the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office.

When asked what's been going through his mind since the incident happened, he said, "Makayla."
