FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Opening up for the first time, the husband and father whose wife and young child were found dead in a Fort Worth Field January 13th still has many unanswered questions.

In his first interview, Anthony Gardner said he does not know what happened the day his wife Lindsay and 13-month-old were discovered dead about 500 feet in the opposite direction of their wrecked car.

"It's something people shouldn't have to go through," said Gardner. "I don't even understand why she was in that area in the first place because it was the total opposite direction of her parent's house."

Gardner said the night before the incident, his wife decided to stay at her parents house because it was closer to her work. When he said goodbye, he noticed she did not have a jacket.

"I ran down there and she was already leaving. Tried to catch up with the car to give them a blanket but I couldn't keep up with the car," said Gardner.

Sources told CBS 11 that investigators have not ruled out hypothermia as a cause of death. The medical examiner's office said on Monday it still has not finished the investigation.

"It makes it a little harder to deal with. Be nice to understand what happened and make it easier to come to terms with," said Gardner.

On Tuesday, Gardner is leaving for California to be closer to his family. He is leaving behind the city he, his wife and daughter called.

"It felt like a, like a torture room almost. Not being able to get that out of my life has just been constant reminder everyday and it sucks," said Gardner.

At 21-years-old, Gardner now must learn to start over after he lost everything.

"Hug them everyday. Make sure they know you love them because you never know when it's going to be their last day," said Gardner.

Gardner said on top of all he has dealt with, he said his apartment complex will not let him out of his lease.

Coffee Creek Apartments told CBS 11 "no comment" when reached in person and the phone.
