FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - In North Fort Worth, Harriett Creek, near the Texas Motor Speedway, is back in its banks… for now.

"It makes all of us really nervous," says nearby homeowner Sylvia Stringfellow. "It's like, where is all of this water gonna go?"

For most of the past 8 years, Harriett Creek could have been called Harriett creekbed. Locals say it is typically bone dry. But, not anymore… this morning the creek became a raging river.

A Northwest ISD school bus was stopped at a red light at Blue Mound Road and 114 this morning. The rushing water washed it from the roadway before the light could turn green.

"It comes like that!" says Stringfellow, snapping her fingers for emphasis, "and so when people say 'I don't understand how someone got caught in flash flood'… they got caught in a flash flood because it happens in a matter of seconds!"

No students were on the bus when the roadway filled with water. But, it was enough to worry nearby parents.

"Scary," says Rosi Gonzalez, "very scary. Thank God there were no children in that bus. I'll tell you that much."

Gonzalez says she travels that highway daily—without ever thinking that danger could come so quickly. "I can't imagine, you're thinking the road's clear and then water rushes."

The overflowing creek, which receded almost as quickly, filled a nearby convenience store with more than a foot of dirty water. Merchandise valued at thousands of dollars was destroyed.

So far, the rising water hasn't reached nearby homes. But, Stringfellow keeps a `go bag' packed and ready.

"It's got my clothes, dog food for my Yorkie, medication and I keep it packed and by the door because it happens [snap] like that!"
