Family Pit Bull Mauls & Kills Baby, Dog Euthanized

BURLESON (CBSDFW.COM) - A 3-month-old baby is dead after being savagely attacked by the family's pit bull.

Police had already been sent to the area in Burleson, after receiving a 911 hangup call from a cell phone. Once in the neighborhood, between N.W. Summercrest Boulevard and FM 731, police discovered a family disturbance at one home.

"The officers observed the baby outside and checked its welfare when they got on the scene," Sgt. Cindy Aaron explained. "They said the baby seemed fine and it had fallen asleep. So, they had handed it to one of the relatives to go put in the bed inside, and the dogs were inside the house."

According to Aaron, a few minutes later officers heard screams coming from inside the house.

"A man came running from inside the house carrying the infant."

Officers knew the boy was injured and the child was quickly rushed to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth where he died.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's website identifies the child as Rayden Bruce, who just turned 3-months-old on Monday.

Police continue to investigate the case and early Tuesday morning Aaron said, "The dog was believed to be a pit bull and it has been quarantined by our Burleson Animal Control." By lunchtime the dog had been euthanized.

Police have not determined if any criminal charges will be filed in the case.
