Dallas Megachurch To Encourage 'Tweeting' For Jesus During Sermons
DALLAS (KRLD) -- You could call it "facebooking" for Jesus. One North Texas mega-church could soon be encouraging its congregants to keep their cell-phones on instead of turning them off during Sunday service.
The idea is already being implemented near Houston. Rector Jim Liberatore of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Pearland is encouraging his congregation to defy conventional church wisdom and keep their cell phones on during services. Liberatore encourages those present to send out tweets or post on Facebook about his sermon.
"We have a pretty young congregation -- the median age is 33 -- and so many of them I deal with them on social media as much as I do in presence of them," says Liberatore. "I just think this is a different way for people to connect with each other, to share their faith -- and I think Jesus would make use of it."
So, does he think Jesus would have a Twitter account?
"I do... I'm not sure what his handle would be, but I'd think he'd have one," says Liberatore.
And here in North Texas, Senior Pastor Robert Jeffress of First Baptist Church says he's been mulling over a similar idea for about six months and plans on rolling it out sometime after their downtown Dallas campus opens on Easter Sunday.

"Right now we're focused on getting into our new campus...so as soon as we make that great move and we invite of all our DFW residents to come celebrate with us in the month of April -- once we're in there, we'll start talking about how to use the technology for good," says Jeffress "After all, Jesus told us we need to preach the gospel to all people, and I think if he had an iPhone, he might've used technology in his day as well."
