City Councilman Surrenders At Dallas Jail For Alleged Involvement In Scooter Crash
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - It was around 10:45 a.m. when a Dallas city councilman went to the Dallas County Jail with his lawyer.
Kevin Felder was there to surrender after a judge signed a warrant for his arrest on Monday. Dallas police confirm the council member was "arrested and processed for the charge of Accident Involving Injury."
He was later released on a $2,500 bond for personal recognizance after processing by the Dallas County Sheriff.
According to court records released Tuesday, the teen told police he was struck from behind and thrown off his scooter so quickly, he couldn't brace himself before hitting the ground. A detective wrote one of the teen's arms was scraped raw and bleeding. The other was swollen and in pain. The police report also showed when officers towed Felder's vehicle, they "found damage under the front, right corner of the plastic bumper near the front tire, consistent with the collision" as it had been described.
A witness to the aftermath told CBS 11 News she saw the Felder and the teen exchanging words and heard Felder ask the boy, "Do you know who I am?"
She says the teen appeared to have scraped his arm in the accident.
The warrant for Felder's arrest was issued while he attended a meeting a Dallas City Hall. He tried to avoid cameras and did not answer questions from reporters as he left from the building on Monday.
At an afternoon news conference, Pete Schulte, the attorney representing Felder, continued to deny that any collision took place. He claims Felder had instead stopped to warn the teen about swerving in the roadway.
Schulte said the case is nothing more than unfounded accusations.
"Getting from probable cause to beyond a reasonable doubt is going to be impossible, because Councilman Felder did not strike that young man on the scooter," said Schulte.
Felder was noticeably absent from a District 7 City Council candidate forum Tuesday night.
One candidate trying to defeat Felder, Korey Mack, said, "In almost every case, if we elect someone who is up on this stage including me who is number nine, we will elevate the representation of District 7 at City Hall."
