The 31-year-old Bickell is stepping away from the game after he was diagnosed in November 2016 with with multiple sclerosis.
The newly retired hockey player and his wife, both animal lovers, are concentrating on their foundation, CBS 2's Rob Johnson reports.
"I am hopeful I will be able to return to the ice and continue playing the game that I love," Bickell says.
Bickell was traded last week to the Hurricanes, along with promising forward Teuvo Teravainen.
"We obviously like what he brings to the table," Bowman says of Shaw.
