SAN ANTONIO -- The Chicago Wolves and San Antonio Rampage traded goals through the first 40 minutes of play but the Rampage were able to grab the lone goal in the third to hand the Wolves a 2-1 defeat Wednesday night at the AT&T Center.
Forward Michael Davies posted the lone goal for Chicago, which played its third contest of a season-high seven-game road trip. Despite the loss, the Wolves remain three points up on the Charlotte Checkers for first place in the American Hockey League's Midwest Division with six games remaining in the regular season.
With the game tied at one after two periods of play, San Antonio (38-28-3-2) grabbed the eventual game-winning goal at the 9:03 mark the third period.
Center Scott Timmins skated along the near boards and sent a softer wrister on net that Wolves goaltender Eddie Lack controlled at first, but the puck trickled over his shoulder and dropped down over the goal line.
Lack (19-19-3) kicked out 30 of 32 shots.
The Rampage opened scoring at 16:14 of the opening period when center Wacey Rabbit slid a pass from the bottom the far circle to defenseman Roman Derlyuk in the slot who tapped home a shot into an empty net.
Chicago (38-26-3-3) knotted the score 1-1 at 14:58 of the second period. Center Jordan Schroeder stripped a Rampage skater at the blueliner and Bill Sweatt's shot hit the glove of Rampage netminder Jacob Markstrom but the puck fell to the crease where Davies skated in and fired home the rebound.
Markstrom (14-11-1) posted 31 saves, including 14 in the third period.
The Wolves continue their road swing against the Houston Aeros at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Toyota Center.
