Vacant Industrial Space Being Snapped Up In Itasca
ITASCA, Ill. (CBS) -- West suburban Itasca is patting itself on the forklift for a 20 percent decrease in vacant industrial space.
As WBBM Newsradio's John Cody reports, city planner Grant Davis says the business influx really helped magnify the western suburb.
"We're up to a tally 8,000 people at night, so 8,000 residents. During the day, we go up to about 18,000," Davis said.
Davis says Itasca has added 325 jobs, and filled up 800,000 vacant square feet of industrial space.
"A lot of these were vacancies that had been since the downturn, so we're seeing that being filled out at this point," he said.
Davis attributes the industrial expansion to low property and sales taxes, a transparent permitting process, and the location – five miles west of O'Hare International Airport at the junction of interstates 290 and 355.
