The Worst Towns In Illinois
CHICAGO (CBS) -- First, let's dispense with the good news: Generally, the worst towns in Illinois are far away from Chicago.
And the 10 best towns are all Chicago suburbs, according to an analysis by a company called RoadSnacks.
The worst town in Illinois, according to the study, is Benton, located off Interstate 57 in Franklin County.
Benton residents had a 1 in 40 chance of having something stolen from them last year, the study found.
Unemployment stands at 9.4% and residents earn about $29,000 a year. A total of 17 percent of families live below the poverty line.
Carbondale, which did not make the list, has the lowest income in the state, at $17,743, following by East St. Louis (ranked No. 3) at $19,278, according to the study.
East St. Louis had the worst crime index, followed by south suburban Harvey, the study found.
