The Bernstein Brief: Silver Lining For Cubs In The NL Loss?

By Dan Bernstein--
CBSChicago.com senior columnist

(CBS) Let's get way ahead of ourselves for a moment, because all the down time during the All-Star break can allow minds to wander.

Even as well-represented as they were Tuesday at the All-Star Game, the Cubs themselves couldn't successfully influence the outcome beyond Kris Bryant's solo home run. So World Series home-field advantage belongs to the American League champions this year.

For the Cubs, that may not be the disadvantage it would be for any other team in their league, when we remember the "good problem" they faced at the outset of the season -- trying to find lineup spots for all of their bats.

If and when the Cubs find themselves rounding back into better health, there may be opportunity in a deciding game with an available DH spot, wherever it may be played. And as long as we're being silly about this, imagine if a certain left-handed slugger is ready for batting-only action in late October.

I'm sure they have been honest about not wanting to bring Kyle Schwarber back until the spring, but there now may be the possibility of temptation before then if his rehab goes well.
