Suspect On Trial In Derrion Albert Beating Death

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One of the five young men charged with murdering Fenger High School honors student Derrion Albert is on trial Friday.

Silvonus Shannon, 20, is accused of taking part in the mob beating that killed Albert, 16, on Sept. 24, 2009. The beating in front of the Agape Community Center, 342 W. 111th St., captured on video and renewed calls for an end to street violence.

Albert was caught in the middle of a fight between Fenger students who lived in "The Ville" neighborhood near the school, and students who lived more than four miles south in the Altgeld Gardens public housing development.

A 15-year-old boy has already been convicted in the case as a juvenile offender. He will be locked up at least until the age of 21.

Three defendants – Eugene Riley, 19, Lapoleon Colbert, 20, and Eric Carson, 17, are still awaiting trial.
