Some People You Should Know: The Melodeers

(CBS) -- There are 140 of them who get together for the joy of singing.

CBS 2's Harry Porterfield says the Melodeers are all someone you should know.

It all began when barbershop patrons started singing while waiting to get their hair cut. A century or so later, the Melodeers chorus is taking the music to a dazzling new height with 140 ladies singing in unaccompanied four-part harmony.

"I love it. I've been around a barbershop all my entire life. The organization calls me a barbershop rat," jokes member Erin Keeber.

The group rehearses each Wednesday evening at the Mart Mariam Chaldean Catholic Church in Northbrook. Mater director Jim Ans says members come with all experience levels.

Kaye Jensen is the oldest member.

"I live a Melodeer life at home. I'm singing all the time. It's contagious," she says.

The chorus has won six Sweet Adeline International gold medals.
