A semi-trailer truck was killed and another driver was injured early Tuesday morning in a fiery crash that shut down the inbound Edens Expressway in the early-morning hours.

According to Illinois State Police, a semi-truck and a blue Toyota Camry were involved in the crash on the Edens near the Touhy Avenue exit — on the boundary of Skokie and Lincolnwood — just before 4 a.m. ISP said the truck rolled over and caught fire.

The driver of the semi-truck was pronounced dead. The driver's identity remained unknown Tuesday afternoon.

ISP said the Toyota driver was taken to a in an unknown condition.

Police said it was unclear why the truck rolled over and then quickly caught fire.

The crash forced traffic to divert off the expressway — causing a major traffic jam for traffic coming into the city during the morning rush. Scanner traffic indicated the overpass had to be checked for damage.

The truck hit an overhead sign and the supports for the overpass, scanner traffic indicated.

Inspectors from the Illinois Department of Transportation examined the overpass and determined it was fine.

Police have not confirmed the cause of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
