Sam Hurd Preparing Guilty Plea; Faces 10 Years To Life In Prison

(CBS) Former Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd is reportedly preparing to plead guilty in the federal drug case against him.

"A plea of guilty is in the works," Jay Ethington, Hurd's Dallas-based attorney, told the Tribune.

Hurd, who played his college ball at Northern Illinois University, is charged with drug conspiracy and accused of conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana.

The former wide receiver faces a maximum sentence of 10 years to life in prison and a $10 million fine.

Hurd's cousin and another associate have already pleaded guilty to drug charges and are expected to testify against him if the case goes to trial.

Hurd was arrested in December of 2011 after he allegedly told an undercover agent he wanted to buy mass quantities of cocaine and marijuana to sell.
