Reports: Cubs Hitting Coach Mueller Resigns

(CBS) Cubs hitting coach Bill Mueller has resigned, according to multiple reports.

Chicago now has two hitting coach positions open, as assistant hitting coach Mike Brumley was dismissed last week and offered a different position in the organization.

That latter move opened speculation that Manny Ramirez could be hired after what the team called a successful stint working at Triple-A Iowa as a player-coach, but Ramirez isn't expected to be considered for the lead hitting coach role, ESPN's Jesse Rogers reported.

The Cubs need Ramirez to officially retire before making any moves on that front.

Mueller had been with the Cubs for just one season, and they ranked 26th in the big leagues in runs scored and led it in strikeouts.

Mueller likely resigned for family reasons and because of his close relationship with Brumley, the Daily Herald's Bruce Miles tweeted.
