Police: Person Killed In Wrong Way Crash On I-55

DARIEN, Ill. (STMW) -- One person died Sunday morning after a wrong way driver collided with a vehicle in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 near west suburban Darien, state police said.

The crash happened about 5:30 a.m. on southbound I-55 at Lemont Road, said Illinois State Police Sgt. Bruce Orns.

One person, of an unknown age and gender, was pronounced dead at the scene, Orns said. It was not immediately known if there were any other injuries.

As of 9:15 a.m., all southbound lanes of I-55 were reopened from Lemont Road to the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355) interchange, Orns said. Lanes were shut down earlier due to the crash.

A representative from the Darien-Woodridge Fire District, which also responded to the crash, referred all questions to state police.
