As WBBM's Lisa Fielding reports, volunteers are now awaiting a cargo plane to transport tons of donations to the Philippines.

It started as a grass-roots effort at the Rizal Center, 1332 W Irving Park Road.

Just days later, donations filled the entire building.

It includes more than 5,000 boxes of supplies, including 2,000 cases of water and $2 million worth of medical supplies and canned food, organizers said.

Some of the supplies are on the to the Philippines by boat.

However, organizers need a transport plane for most of the supplies.

Gov. Pat Quinn said on Friday that he is working with the federal government to get a National Guard C-130 to fly the supplies to the ravaged region.
