One Killed, One Seriously Hurt In New City Crash

CHICAGO (STMW) -- One man was killed and another seriously injured when a vehicle hit a pole early Saturday in the South Side New City neighborhood, police said.

The 2006 silver Lincoln hit the pole in the 4800 block of South Damen Avenue about 12:25 a.m., police News Affairs Officer Amina Geer said.

A passenger, a 35-year-old man, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he later died, Greer said.

He was pronounced dead at 1:03 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. His identity was withheld early Saturday pending notification of relatives.

The man driving, 25, was also taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in the one-vehicle crash, but no charges or citations have been issued as of early Saturday, Greer said.
