One Hurt In Naperville Fire

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (STMW) -- One person suffered minor injuries Thursday afternoon during a fire at a heating and cooling business in west suburban Naperville.

The fire that damaged Dutchman Heating & Cooling Inc., 400 E. Ogden Ave., erupted one week to the day after fire ravaged Grandma Sally's Family Restaurant, less than a block away at 450 E. Ogden Ave.

Naperville Fire Department Bureau Chief Amy Scheller said an employee or customer of Dutchman Heating & Cooling called 911 about 2:38 p.m. Thursday, reporting fire on the roof.

Twenty-four firefighters brought 10 vehicles and pieces of apparatus to the scene, Scheller said in a release. While they were en route, 911 dispatchers received word that a vehicle also was on fire inside a garage in the business, Scheller said.

All of the occupants had gotten safely out of the building by the time firefighters arrived at 2:42 p.m., Scheller said. The blaze was under control within five minutes.

"The main body of the fire was confined to the roof and garage area," Scheller said. She estimated damage at $75,000.

Scheller said the fire was caused by "roofers using a heat gun to apply patching materials on the roof." The building was later found to be habitable, she said.

Firefighters were assisted on the scene by Naperville police, and firefighters from the Plainfield and Wheaton firefighting agencies provided coverage at Naperville fire stations during the emergency, Scheller said.

The unidentified man or woman was released from Edward Hospital in Naperville, after undergoing treatment in the emergency room for what Scheller said were minor burns.

The fire at Grandma Sally's erupted in the early-morning hours of July 17, and did an estimated $400,000 damage. Its cause remains under investigation.
