North Side Bike Store Thieves Caught On Camera
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Surveillance cameras were rolling as a group of people broke into a high-end bike store on the North Side last weekend, stealing $20,000 worth of bikes and accessories.
CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports the robbery occurred around 5 a.m. last Sunday at Lakeshore Bike on Recreation Drive near Addison.
The suspects appear to be wearing reflective bike clothing and can be seen using a crow bar to pry the wall apart.
"It looked to be a three foot long crowbar. These are not actually doors, these are bolted to the foundation and the wall," said owber Demian March.
March says a custom, specialized Venge bike with electronic shifting and carbon wheels, worth about $7,000 was among the items stolen.
"They cherry picked the top five items that were in my shop," March said. "I think they were very familiar with what I had in stock."
Three Fuji Norcom bikes were taken, each was worth $2,500. Also a Kestrel Legend, with the same value.
"There's no question he's someone from the bike community and one of the nice things is the Chicago bike community has reached out in great numbers to try to solve this," March said.
March says this is the second burglary in just over a month at his shop. Now he's thinking about whether he'll be keeping his business on the lakefront.
